Il complesso nebulare IC 2118, conosciuto anche come Testa della Strega è una regione nebulare a riflessione molto debole nella costellazione di Eridano, a pochi gradi di distanza dalla stella Rigel, in Orione.
La luce di Rigel si riflette sulle polveri stellari creando una forma che sembra una faccia orrenda, da qui il nome di Testa della Strega
IC 2118, also known as Witch Head nebula, is an extremely faint reflection nebula located in the constellation of Eridnaus very close to the the 0.3 magnitude star Rigel in Orion. Rigel's light is reflected off interstellar dust to its right. IC 2118 is shaped much like the ugly face of a witch so it has the name "Witch-head Nebula"

Questa foto della nebulosa Testa della Strega (IC 2118), visibile nella costellazione dell'Eridano, è frutto di una serie di scatti effettuati da Arcidosso (GR) al fuoco diretto di un telescopio Takahashi FS60C su montatura Gemini G41 Obs con Fs2. Gli scatti sono stati effettuati nei giorni 9 e 10 novembre, 8, 28 e 29 dicembre 2007 per un totale di 62 scatti da 10 minuti l'uno.
A causa dell'estrema debolezza della nebulosa e della sua scarsa altezza sull'orizzonte ho dovuto scartare ben 36 immagini. La foto è perciò la somma di 26 esposizioni da 10 minuti cadauna, con una fotocamera digitale Canon Eos 20D con filtro modificato, settato a 800 ISO, che sono state effettuate con inseguimento mediante rifrattore 120/600 in parallelo e autoguida SBIG ST4.
Successivamente i frames sono stati sommati con DeepSkyStacker sottraendo il dark e applicando il flat. E' stato diviso il segnale della nebulosa ed elaborato separatamente dalle stelle mediante stretching, maschera sfocata e riduzione del rumore. Successivamente è stata riunita la componente stellare ed effettuato il bilanciamento del colore.
This photo of the Witch Head nebula (IC 2118), in Eridanus, was taken from Arcidosso, in Italy, near Grosseto, in the backyard of my home, at the prime focus of a Takahashi FS60C telescope using a Gemini G41 Obs mount with Fs2. I took the pictures in many days, 9 and 10 novembre, 8, 28 and 29 december 2007.
Because of its very faint light I took away 36 pictures. So the photo is the sum of 21 frames of 10 minutes, with a Dslr camera Canon Eos 20D (filter modified), exposed at 800 ISO, taken with a Sbig ST4 autoguide on a refractor 120/600.
Then I summed the frames with DeepSkyStacker, calibrating the frames with the dark and the flat, and then processed the nebula layer using a stretching, an unsharp mask, a noise reduction. At last I joined the star layer and set a color balance.
