IC 1318 è una gigantesca regione con emissioni in HII e una delle nebulose più brillanti nel complesso nebulare della costellazione del Cigno. La stella luminosa nel centro del campo è Gamma Cygni, conosciuta anche con il nome di Sadr. Ci sono consistenti zone oscure nella regione dovute a nubi di polvere nella biforcazione della Via Lattea che attenuano la luce di molte stelle brillanti. L'intero complesso nebulare di IC 1318 è in realtà composto da tre singole componenti denominate IC1318 a, b e c. Il complesso di IC 1318 somiglia a una farfalla e da ciò deriva il suo nome di "Butterfly Nebula" IC 1318 is a giant HII region and one of the brightest nebulas in the Cygnus complex. The bright star in the center of the field is Gamma Cygni, also known as Sadr. There is considerable obscuration of the region due to dusty clouds within the great rift of the Milky Way which attenuates the light of many of the bright stars. The entire nebula complex referred to as IC 1318 has three distinct visible components, IC1318 a, b, and c. The complex seems to be like a butterfly which has led to its popular name as the "Butterfly Nebula".

Questa foto della nebulosa IC 1318, visibile nella costellazione del Cigno, è stata scattata il 16 agosto 2007 dal Parco Faunistico del Monte Labro (GR) al fuoco diretto di un telescopio Takahashi FS60C (60 mm F:6) su montatura Gemini G41 Obs con Fs2. La foto è la somma di 20 esposizioni da 6 minuti cadauna, con una fotocamera digitale Canon Eos 300D con filtro modificato, settato a 800 ISO, che sono state effettuate con inseguimento mediante rifrattore 102/500 in parallelo e autoguida SBIG ST4. Successivamente i frames sono stati sommati con DeepSkystacker. E' stato elaborato separatamente il segnale di luminanza mediante stretching, maschera sfocata e riduzione del rumore. Successivamente è stato riunito il file di crominanza e bilanciato il colore. This photo of the Butterfly Nebula (IC 1318), in Cygnus, was taken on august 16, 2007 from the Faunistic Park of Labro Mount, in Italy, near Grosseto, at the prime focus of a Takahashi FS60C telescope (60 mm F:6) using a Gemini G41 Obs mount with Fs2. The photo is the sum of 20 frames, each of 6 minutes, with a Dslr camera Canon Eos 300D Rebel (filter modified), exposed at 800 ISO, taken with a Sbig ST4 autoguide on a refractor 102/500. Then I summed the frames with DeepSkyStacker. I processed the luminance layer using a stretching, an unsharp mask, a noise reduction. At last I joined the layer together with the cromince and balanced the color.
