Subito a Est di Merak (conosciuta anche come Beta dell'Orsa Maggiore) possiamo trovare due oggetti Messier poco visibili in quanto abbastanza deboli. Il primo è una nebulosa planetaria con due zone quasi circolari oscure che le sono valse il nome di Nebulosa Gufo mentre la seconda è una galassia barrata vista di taglio. Appartengono al catalogo redatto da Charles Messier rispettivamente con il numero 97 e il numero 108. Close east from Merak (also known as Beta Ursae Majoris) we can find two faint Messier objects . The first one is a planetary nebula with two dark shadows. Its shape remember the eyes of the owl, so the name of Owl Nebula. The second one is a spiral galaxy. Charles Messier included them in his catalogue with the number 97 and 108.

Questa foto della galassia M108 e della sua vicina nebulosa Gufo M97 (in alto a sinistra) è stata scattata il 5 aprile 2008 da Arcidosso (GR) al fuoco diretto di un telescopio Takahashi TSA 102 con riduttore di focale (f/6.3) su montatura Gemini G41 obs con elettronica FS2. L'esposizione è la somma di 12 frames da 10 minuti ciascuno con la Canon EOS 20D settata a 800 ISO, ed è stata effettuata con autoguida SBIG ST-4 e  rifrattore 120/600 in parallelo. Sono stati ripresi anche 5 dark frames, 9 flat e altrettanti dark dei flat. Successivamente i frames sono stati calibrati con Deep Sky Stacker e sommati con Registar. Il file risultante è stato convertito in bianco e nero per creare un file artificiale di luminanza sul quale sono stati operati filtri passa alto selettivi sulla galassia e sulla nebulosa, mentre il fondo cielo ha subito un leggero filtro passa basso. In seguito al file di luminanza è stato aggiunto il colore ripreso dal file somma precedentemente salvato ed effettuato un ultimo bilanciamento dei colori. This photo of the M108 galaxy and the neighbour Owl nebula M97 (on left top) was taken on april 5, 2008 from Arcidosso, in Italy, near Grosseto, at the prime focus of a Takahashi TSA102 refractor with reducer at f/6.3 using a Gemini G41 obs mount with FS2 controller. The photo is the sum of 12 frames of 10 minutes using a Canon Eos 20D Digital camera at 800 ISO and they were taken with a SBIG ST-4 autoguide on a small refractor 120/600. I took also 5 dark frames, 9 flat and 9 dark of flat frames. Then I calibrated the frames with Deep Sky Stacker and summed them with Registar. Then I desaturated the resulting files to create an artificial luminance layer. I applied a high pass filter on the nebula and the galaxy and a low pass filter on the sky background. Then I added the crominance layer to the luminance one and balanced the color.
