M106 (centoseiesimo oggetto del catalogo redatto da Charles Messier) è una galassia a spirale nella costellazione dei Cani da Caccia. In realtà non fu scoperta da Messier ma da Pierre Mechain nel 1781. Fa parte del Gruppo Locale trovandosi a una distanza di circa 25 milioni di anni luce da noi. E' anche una galassia di Seyfert, con consistenti emissioni di onde radio e raggi X. Nelle immediate vicinanze si notano molte altre galassie fra cui le più luminose sono NGC 4220 (a Nord Est), NGC 4248 (molto vicina a Est) e NGC 4217 (un po' più lontana sempre a est ma con declinazione leggermente inferiore). M106 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Canes Venatici. It is one of the components of the Local Group due its distnace of about 25 million of light years. This galaxy is also a Seyfert galaxy with important emission of radiovawe and X-ray. In the close area of the sky it's possible to see many other galaxies as NGC 4220 (at North East), NGC 4248 (close East), NGC 4217 (little more far East-South-East) and many others fainter.

Questa foto della galassia M106 e delle sue vicine è stata scattata il 4 e il 5 aprile 2008 da Arcidosso (GR) al fuoco diretto di un telescopio Takahashi TSA 102 con riduttore di focale (f/6.3) su montatura Gemini G41 obs con elettronica FS2. L'esposizione è la somma di 24 foto da 10 minuti ciascuno effettuate nelle due notti con la Canon EOS 20D settata a 800 ISO, ed è stata effettuata con autoguida SBIG ST-4 e  rifrattore 120/600 in parallelo. Sono stati ripresi anche 5 dark frames, 9 flat e altrettanti dark dei flat. Successivamente i frames sono stati calibrati con Deep Sky Stacker e sommati con Registar. Sono state elaborate in modo diverso le stelle dal nucleo delle galassie e dai bracci esterni delle stelle con filtri selettivi passa alto mentre per il fondo cielo è stato applicato un passa basso. In seguito è stato effettuato un ultimo bilanciamento dei colori. This photo of the M106 galaxy and the neighbours was taken on april 4 and 5, 2008 from Arcidosso, in Italy, near Grosseto, at the prime focus of a Takahashi TSA102 refractor with reducer at f/6.3 using a Gemini G41 obs mount with FS2 controller. The photo is the sum of 24 frames of 10 minutes using a Canon Eos 20D Digital camera at 800 ISO and they were taken in two night with a SBIG ST-4 autoguide on a small refractor 120/600. I took also 5 dark frames, 9 flat and 9 dark of flat frames. Then I calibrated the frames with Deep Sky Stacker and summed them with Registar. After this I processed the stars, the core of galaxies and the arms with separate and selective high pass filters while I processed the background sky with a low pass one. At last I balanced the color.
